Court Conviction 30March22

Alert message sent 30/03/2022 20:55:00

Information sent on behalf of Gloucestershire Constabulary

Dear Community Alert Members,

On 26th February 2022 I published a message updating you on investigations into offences alleged to have been committed by Mr John Wild of Wotton-Under-Edge. Mr Wild had been charged with offences committed in mid-February, had appeared at court and had been remanded in custody. He was also due in court in March for a separate investigation for an offence of harassment.

Today, 30th March 2022, Mr Wild appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates Court via video link. He was convicted of three offences of harassment, two offences of criminal damage and one of threatening behaviour, a Public Order Act offence. The court sentenced him to 26 weeks imprisonment, the most that the Magistrates could give.

He was also issued with a three year long Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). Conditions on that order include that Wild is forbidden from -
Being in a public place with an open container of alcohol in Wotton-Under-Edge.
Entering the Mid-counties Co-operative store in Long St, Wotton-Under-Edge.
Three other conditions ban him from attending specific addresses in Wotton. We shall be liaising with relevant occupiers of those addresses directly. Breaching the above conditions is a criminal offence that can carry up to five years imprisonment. This CBO runs alongside the Civil Injunction that the Constabulary secured last month.

In recent months John Wild has misused alcohol regularly. His behaviour towards residents of Wotton and visitors to the town when drunk has been awful. He has frequently been abusive and threatening to people without provocation and many of his victims are women. Wild has repeatedly been offered, but declined, help for his alcoholism. I hope that this sentence, the Criminal Behaviour Order and the Civil Injunction result in a drastic improvement in his conduct on release. If it does not then the order and injunction provide us with the tools to address any new offending.
