Aberdeenshire Delivery Scam

Alert message sent 09/03/2022 12:44:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

Police have issued a warning regarding a mobile phone delivery scam following an incident in Aberdeenshire.

A resident in the south of Aberdeenshire received a call from a male stating he was from a well-known mobile phone shop offering an upgrade deal on his mobile. A deal was agreed and several days later a new phone arrived at the complainers address. Minutes after the delivery the suspect called and stated they had sent the wrong phone and could the phone be sent back. The complainer became suspicious and contacted his real mobile phone provider who confirmed it was a scam. The complainer checked his credit card account and found two unauthorised transactions.

North East Division Crime Reduction Officer PC Mike Urquhart warned ‘Delivery scams are one of the sophisticated methods fraudsters are using to leave victims out of pocket. The scam involves criminals contacting victims and persuading them to hand over their credit card details. The goods arrive and then the victims are advised to send the items back - leaving the victims out of pocket. It normally happens when criminals manage to obtain your personal details and can be one consequence of identity theft.’

Check the credentials of all cold callers to ensure they are from the company they claim to be representing. If you have any fears, contact the police.
