Safety event at residential homes

Alert message sent 10/11/2021 12:49:00

Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

This morning we have attended a supported living home in Shelton lock to offer safety advice and some gadgets to reassure residents. This is in relation to a recent spike in rogue traders/ bogus callers/ fake charity collectors targeting certain homes that contain vulnerable residents and employing distraction burglary techniques.

We have had several reports with similar descriptions of a white male, blonde hair in his 30s or 40s called Chris, as well as a colleague, who have been knocking on residents doors attempting to sell wash cloths, tea towels and household cleaning products. Once inside they will distract the resident and take purses, cards or safes with some residents losing several hundreds of pounds.

Advice we have shared is:

✅ If it is an unexpected visitor always open the door on the chain or latch if possible until you can identify the person.
✅ Always ask for identification- genuine sales people/ charity collectors/ utility contractors will normally have photo ID. If you suspect it to be false contact their employer with them present to identify them. Genuine visitors should not mind this process.
✅ If you suspect anything, rearrange a visit and notify the manager, staff or family regarding what has occurred.
❌Never discuss or show a stranger where valuables or money is kept. Ensure it is secure and if concerned enquire about key safes for your valuables.
❌ Never invite anyone into your residence if they are not expected, or you have concerns about their identity.
❌Ensure you always lock the door to your property when leaving, even if it is in a secure complex and do not share pin codes, fobs or access passes with anyone other than next of kin.

We appreciate much of this is used on a daily basis by residents however these unsavoury characters purposely target the most vulnerable who may not be aware.

We are visiting another supported living home on Friday, if you have concerns for a resident or relative please get in touch to potentially arrange a similar event at a home.
Thank you, sam
