Bogus callers

Alert message sent 08/09/2021 13:02:00

Information sent on behalf of West Yorkshire Police

Good afternoon Citizen,

Do you get many bogus callers/visitors where you live?

When someone calls at the door and offers to do repairs to your home, ask for urgent help, or when an official knocks on your door, consider the following;
  • Lock your front and back doors, even when at home;
  • Are you expecting visitors? You don’t have to answer the door;
  • If you decide to open the door, put the chain or bar on first. Keep the chain or bar on whilst speaking with them;
  • Some bogus callers call on elderly and vulnerable people saying they need help urgently. They may ask you to go outside the house or ask to come in to make a phone call. Only go help if you have someone else with you. Don’t worry if you choose not to help, it isn’t rude or unfriendly;
  • Remember to check their ID. Most people will carry an identity card. Consider, do they look like the person on the card? Is the name the same as you are expecting?
  • Check with the companies they’re from (Don’t use a number provided by the visitor);
  • When contacting these companies, close the door and keep the visitor outside;
  • Keep a list of important and useful phone numbers handy.
Gas and electric companies now have passwords for elderly and vulnerable people. Visitors/callers need to provide this.
Bogus callers can turn up as builders or gardeners and try to trick you into paying for unnecessary work.

Remember, if in doubt, keep them out!
