BT Phone Scam

Alert message sent 23/02/2021 10:54:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

We’ve received details of an elderly gentleman in Hamilton, who was contacted by a male, claiming to be from BT.

The caller advised the Hamilton resident his broadband was slow due to a fault with his router and requested £25 to replace it. He advised the money would be refunded and asked for bank details.

The gentleman gave his bank details to the caller but later discovered that £30,000 had been taken from his account.

Police and the bank are investigating.

Your broadband provider will not contact you in this way.

If you receive a similar call and are unsure if it’s real, hang up and contact your broadband provider directly, on independently sourced contact info, to check if it’s legit.

Never give bank details to unsolicited callers.

Stay safe!
