Gas Network Upgrade – Aberdeen City

The following safety message has been circulated on behalf of SGN.

We know that during the coronavirus outbreak, our communities will rely on us now more than ever to keep them safe and warm. The safety of our communities and our employees will remain our number one priority in the weeks and months ahead.

Our safety-critical project to upgrade the gas network in the Windmill Brae area of Aberdeen needs to go ahead now, rather than wait until the pandemic passes, to ensure your local community continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come. We’re working closely with Scottish Government to make sure we carry out our project in line with all current coronavirus safety guidance.

We have agreed with Aberdeen City Council to carry out this necessary work during the national lockdown to minimise disruption to the local community.

From 4 January 2021 Worton Utilities have been carrying out work on our behalf to replace around 425m of metallic main with new PE pipe. To minimise disruption there will be two phases.

Phase 1 (10 days) – we will be working on Windmill Brae from the junction of Crown Road to the junction of College Street. Works will be carried out under ‘Give/Take’ with pedestrian walkways maintained.

Phase 2 (two to three weeks) – we will be working on Guild Street from the junction of Bridge Street to the junction of Trinity Street again renewing the gas main and service pipework. At the end of this phase a five-day closure of Guild Street at the tee junction outside the hotel will be required.

We wish to assure you that our work will progress as quickly as possible and we’ll be doing everything we can to limit delays and disruption. We will be working seven days a week if required to ensure the project remains on schedule.

We have extra safety precautions in place to protect our colleagues and our communities from the virus. Our colleagues will be keeping to social distancing guidelines on our sites and we’d ask communities to keep their distance too. There’s more information about our coronavirus response on our website: sgn.co.uk/coronavirus

We’re writing to residents and other local stakeholders to make them aware of our project and explain the details of our work. Please feel free to also share this information with anyone you think may be impacted by our project.
