Car Crime

Alert message sent 26/10/2020 15:36:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Dear Citizen

On some areas of the West Midlands we’ve seen a rise in vehicle crime offences and we wanted to share the latest car crime prevention tips. We have seen a number of Vauxhall corsa’s being targeted for their bumpers wings bonnets and front lights. Even keyless cars are being stolen using new methods. There are few simple things that you can do to help to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of car crime.

Check with your main dealer that - regardless of the age of the vehicle – it’s had all its recalls completed and software updated. Also see if the latest security measures can be retrofitted to older vehicles. (This can cost less than the excess on your insurance.)

See what latest security products are available. Thatcham is a source of tested products. Consider using a Thatcham tested and approved steering wheel lock.

Keep control of your keys. Valet parking, car washes, and even some garages have been found to copy keys.

Make sure ‘your fob has done the job’, and passengers haven’t left a window or door open.

Don’t leave anything visible in the vehicle. Sat navs / dash cams, loose change and bags attract thieves.

Don’t leave your keys in your vehicle, you never know who is about and your insurance may not pay out.

Choose a well-lit location when parking, with natural or electronic surveillance. Where possible use a ‘Park Mark’ car park.

If you have a garage, use it and think about installing security lights or CCTV.
