Alert message sent 16/06/2020 21:34:00

Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

Police officers and colleagues from the ambulance service are currently dealing with an ongoing incident in the Ridge Green area of Swindon.

We were called following a report of an armed robbery in Rivermead Industrial Estate, Westlea, shortly after 5pm today (16/06).

A man, who was armed with what was believed to be a handgun, had stolen a lorry.

This vehicle was intercepted by armed police in the Ridge Green area and subsequently a police firearm was discharged.

A man in his 50s has suffered a leg wound and has been airlifted to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Superintendent Phil Staynings said: "I want to reassure the community that this incident was dealt with swiftly. Nobody else was injured and the incident is now contained.

"However, people living in the area will have seen a heavy police presence, which will continue throughout the evening.

"Due to the fact that a police firearm was discharged, we have automatically referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."
