Alert message sent 22/05/2020 10:42:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

Beware of cold calls offering PPE

We are aware of reports of cold callers offering face masks, gloves and hand sanitiser for £29.99.

The offer is accompanied by some misleading “facts” about Covid-19 which are designed to scare you into providing your bank details to complete the purchase.

The caller claims that normal masks aren’t as effective as they ones they’re selling.

If you’re looking online for masks, British Standards Institution has released guidance on masks and face coverings for use in the UK

Vistalworks has produced a blog with advice on how to navigate the array of choices in masks and face coverings

Loan Sharks

Loan sharks may try to take advantage of those who find themselves in a financially vulnerable position as a result of lockdown.

Loan sharks operating within a local community can often appear familiar and friendly however, they end up causing huge amounts of misery and distress.

If you need financial advice, you can contact: Trading Standards Scotland has advice on dealing with loan sharks on their website.

Loan sharks can be reported to Trading Standards Scotland's Illegal Money Lending Unit.

More information about these scams and the other scams currently doing the rounds, can be found on Trading Standards Scotland's ScamShare bulletin.
