Have you Locked your Vehicle

Alert message sent 20/03/2020 20:58:00

Information sent on behalf of Leicestershire Police

Dear Members of Oadby

Hello, Hope you all are well. The problem is a rise in Theft of Motor Vehicle in and around the Oadby and Wigston areas, largely within residential areas. Some thefts in both Oadby and Wigston have occurred in public car parks around the main shopping areas of both locations. Looking at the reports majority are Catalytic converter theft and number plate thefts. Some are also opportunists checking for insecure vehicles where they have stolen items left in obvious places. I know a lot is happening with the Pandemic situation but please ensure that your vehicle is secure and contents removed.

The precious metal in catalytic converters has led to an increase in their theft. To keep yours safe, ask your car dealer if they can give you any advice on locks or guards that are approved by the vehicle manufacturer. Alternatively, try to make sure your vehicle is parked in a garage overnight, or if you have a commercial vehicle park it in a secure compound. I know this is not always possible, park in an area that’s well-lit and overlooked and try to park so that the catalytic converter can’t be easily reached by potential thieves so best to explore where this is located on your vehicle so you can try and park in a way it will be difficult to reach. Vehicles that sit high above the road are particularly vulnerable.

Some people have their catalytic converter welded to their car’s frame, which may make it harder to steal. You could consider engraving your vehicle identification number (VIN) or registration on the catalytic converter — this may help alert a scrap dealer that it was stolen and make it easier to identify the owner. Calibrate your car’s alarm to set off when it detects vibration along with dashcams will also have this feature. Again speak to your dealer to see if you can enhance the tilt option of your alarm system which could also help reduce this theft when criminals jack up the vehicle.
