Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

East Renfrewshire Council Trading Standards Service are warning residents to be extra vigilant of scam calls following two reports yesterday from East Renfrewshire residents being targeted by scammers stating they were calling from BT open reach. The scammers called from various mobile numbers and requested the residents access their computer or their internet connection would be compromised.

Please be advised that this is a scam.  If you receive any similar calls please hang up and visit the BT scam help page for more information at www.bt.com/help/home/scams/ or alternatively call Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060

Trading Standards advise if you receive any suspicious phone call to -

• Never reveal personal details. Don't give out personal or financial information (such as your bank account details or your PIN) over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from your bank.
• Hang up. If you feel harassed or intimidated, or if the caller talks over you without giving you a chance to speak, end the call. It may feel rude to hang up on someone, but you have the right not to be pressurised into anything.
• Ring the organisation. If you're unsure whether the caller is genuine, you can always ring the company or bank they claim to be from. Make sure you find the number yourself and don’t use the one provided by the caller.
• Don't be rushed. Scammers will try to rush you into providing your personal details. They may say they have time-limited offer or claim your bank account is at risk if you don't give them the information they need right away.

In addition to this the East Renfrewshire Council Trading Standards Scam Prevention Team are installing telephone call blockers free of charge. This funded project is designed to help residents in vulnerable situations who are experiencing a high number of nuisance calls, or have been a victim of a scam. If you feel you would benefit from a call blocker please call the team on 0141 577 3782 or visit www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/callblockers
