Woking NhW - storm Ciara is coming

Alert message sent 08/02/2020 11:41:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear Woking resident
You should already be aware that the UK is due to be hit with a storm tomorrow (Sunday) that includes high winds and plenty of rain, especially midday. Forecast for Woking is winds of 40-50mph from 0400 to 1900.
Surrey CC has issued no advice whatsoever, but West Sussex CC definitely have and I've "ripped off" some advice from them (see below), and from the SurreyLive website (worth viewing):
Batten down the loose stuff in the garden.
Note that Wisley RHS have already said they will be closed tomorrow and SWRailway are expecting disruption. Please take sensible precautions, especially if out walking the dog tomorrow in the copse and woods in Woking.

The Met Office has issued an Amber Warning - Wind for Sunday 9th February 2020. Storm Ciara will bring very strong winds and potentially some disruption to travel throughout Sunday.  View the full warning at the Met Office Severe Weather Warning site.

The potential impacts of this are:
  • Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected
  • Some roads and bridges likely to close
There is a good chance that power cuts may occur.
Please follow this advice to keep safe and well:

The Met Office website provides clear guidance on what to do before, during and after storms, please visit their website for more information at https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/seasonal-advice/your-home/stay-safe-in-a-storm .

UK Power Networks delivers electricity to most of Surrey. Please refer to their Storm power cuts information at  https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/storm-centre-prepare . Areas to the West may be covered by SSEN who have storm information available at http://news.ssen.co.uk/news/all-articles/2020/february/storm-ciara/

You may not be able to do this during a power cut, so please take note of the emergency phone nos. below.

Please treat electricity cables as live, stay away and call immediately, 24 hours a day on 0800 31 63 105 or 105 (free to call from a land line or a mobile phone). If you see electricity lines that are down or causing significant risk to the public please call 999.

Customers can register for your distributor's Priority Services Register if they require extra assistance. Please contact UKPN or SSEN direct, as appropriate.
