Initial dog handling course

Alert message sent 13/01/2020 16:12:00

Information sent on behalf of Northamptonshire Police

Two trainee police dogs and their handlers have this week started their initial handlers course to become fully licensed PDs and handler crime-fighting duos.

The initial handler’s course is a 13 week course which covers essential skills such as tracking, searching buildings and open spaces for hidden people, searching for discarded property, bite work as well as obedience and agility.

TPD Bryn was purchased for the Force through money raised by a group of retired police officers and staff in memory of former PD Bryn, who died in 1998 on duty after being fatally shot.

TPD Ebby is a part-trained German Shepherd who was purchased by the Force to take over former PD Harper’s role, who retired to the rolling hills of Derbyshire at the end of 2019.

Once trained, Ebby and Bryn will join the ranks of the police dogs currently working across the Force, working to sniff out and catch criminals within the county.

Good luck to officers Lucy and Ash, and PDs Ebby and Bryn!
