Residents of BD5

Alert message sent 22/11/2019 13:22:00

Information sent on behalf of West Yorkshire Police

Joint message from Inspectors Carl O’Brien and John Toothill.

Residents of BD5,

You may have seen on social media recently claims of there being a ‘spike’ in burglaries and robberies in the BD5 area. We understand these messages have caused some concern and are making this statement in the hope it will give you some reassurance.

While there have been some reported incidents in BD5 recently where weapons are alleged to have been used - and there are ongoing investigations into these matters - to say there has been a rise is incorrect.

In fact, our figures for recorded crime show that year on year (so to compare figures from the same periods in 2018 and 2019) there has been a reduction in offences of 30% in the Bradford East area between 1 May and 17 November.

Part of BD5 crosses into the Bradford South area and our figures for these wards also show reductions for the same period – in Little Horton ward by 29% and in West Bowling by 26%.

Please can we take this opportunity to remind people of the ways they can report crime or information that may lead us to identify suspects:

• Non-emergency incidents can be reported on 101 or by using the online options on the West Yorkshire Police website
• If a crime is in progress or there is a danger to life – please dial 999
• Information can also be reported anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or using their online options
West Yorkshire Police does not accept reports of crime via social media.

We would also like to advise you that West Yorkshire traditionally sees a rise in burglaries during the Winter period where it stays darker for longer, so please keep your doors and windows locked at all times and use light timers when you are out – as research shows that burglars are more likely to target an unlit property than a lit one.

Further crime prevention advice can be found on the West Yorkshire Police website.

Please speak to your local officers if you have any additional concerns.

Thank you

Inspectors Carl O’Brien (Bradford South) and John Toothill (Bradford East)
