Alert message sent 06/11/2019 12:43:00

Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

Hello again,
Having sent the last message this morning, within an hour I had had 2 separate replies both about the same topic and very valid indeed.
Clearly my last message was referring to legally held licensed firearms.
Derbyshire Constabulary occasionally hold a Firearms amnesty normally over a 2-week period whereby we receive firearms for destruction that are both certificated and uncertificated.
The query raised has been with regards to unlicensed/unregistered firearms in someone’s possession and them not knowing how to dispose of the item without getting into trouble.
Again, Derbyshire Constabulary and my stance is that these firearms need to be in legally held hands. It is better to come to the police station with the firearm and explain the scenario as to how you have come about possessing the item.
If you have found firearms in the loft or the cellar or garden shed of your house or a relative’s house following death or any other genuine scenario then again, these firearms need to be brought to the previously mentioned police stations. Please ring before attending.
If in doubt, ring this Department, I/ we will be able to advise over the phone.
If a relative/friend dies or no longer wishes to continue possessing shotguns, who is a shotgun certificate holder, and possesses shotguns and you have a shotgun certificate and you are wanting to own their shotguns, then you need to speak to the Firearms Licensing Department to facilitate this transfer. A phone call to the Department with follow up email is agreed process.
The worst thing you can do is hide/ignore the situation, I have had a good conversation with one of my Firearms Enquiry officers and Deputy with regards to this.
There are so many possible scenarios, the best course of action is whoever finds themselves in this situation, need to dispose of the item into police hands with a genuine explanation. Again, if you are unsure, ring my Department and we will give advice and help.
Many thanks
