FORTH VALLEY FINANCIAL HARM GROUP FACEBOOK SCAM

Alert message sent 18/10/2019 10:37:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

The following information is being circulated on behalf of Police Scotland

There have been several incidents reported to officers within the Forth Valley Division of Scams whereby the victims have been receiving what appears to be genuine messages from friends and family members via their Facebook accounts.

The messages advise that the receiver has won a large cash amount on a lottery (different versions mentioned).  The receiver merely has to name the cash amount they would like to win up to and in excess of £100,000.

The scammers then advise that an administration fee, totalling several Thousand of pounds must be paid to get the “winnings”.  This Administration fee can be paid by various means including gift vouchers such as AMAZON or can be straight money transfers from your bank account etc.

Unfortunately this scam has caught out some members of our communities resulting in a significant financial loss.

ADVICE
If you receive a message in this manner from family or friends it is imperative that you make contact with them by phone to advise them accordingly.

Do not under any circumstances use the social media route by which you received the initial message to reply, this may be getting monitored by the scammers.

The scammers have managed to obtain your details and that of your family and friends by what means?

With regards to your social media, consider the following;
  • Lock down your profile
  • Limit who can see your old posts
  • Hide your friends list
  • Keep photos private
The above list is not exhaustive and all aspects of ensuring that your personal information remains private must be considered.

Think about the offer!!!.   (Just pick what you want to win)  If it seems too good to be true, that’s because it is?
