Recently there has been some questions asked on Neighbourhood Alert about the Role of Police Community Support Officers.

This Neighbourhood Alert will give you some information around the role of a Police Community Support Officer also known as a PCSO.

POLICE COMMUNITY SUPPORT OFFICER

Police Community Support Officers in Northamptonshire police work within the neighbourhood policing team and work shifts from (08:00 - 00:00).

They are not Police Constables but hold separate powers which are designated by the police Constable of each home office force area and the British Transport Police and are paid members of police staff.

Police Community Support Officers wear a different uniform and their role is to reduce the fear of crime and Anti-social behaviour and problem solve neighbourhood issues this could range from street drinking issues to Neighbourhood Nuisance.

Recently Police Community Support Officers have been given more powers to carry out their role some powers they have are:

- To detain someone for 30 mins  
- Issue Fixed Penalty Notices for: Cycling on the footpath & Wilful obstruction of the Highway 
- Issue penalty Notices for disorder eg: serving a drunk person alcohol or wasting police time
- Issue Fixed Penalty notices for failing to comply with public spaces protection orders
- Issue community protection notices
- Direct traffic 
- Scene Guard 
- Powers to search for alcohol and tobacco from children
- Powers to seize drugs & produce to a police constable 
- Power to obtain Name & address for anti-social behaviour 
​​​​​​- Powers to seize vehicles used to cause harassment alarm or distress
- Power to take an individuals photograph away from the Police Station
- Powers to remove abandoned vehicles 
​​​​​​- Power to require individuals to surrender vessels of alcohol within the confines of a PSPO
- Power to disperse youths
- Power to issue a Section 35 Dispersal Order ( When S34 issues by inspector)

(Powers vary from time to time and correct at time of publishing)

PCSO’s conduct highly visible patrols and use police systems to gather information and intelligence around persons involved in criminal activities and also support partner agencies in preventing crime and safeguarding vulnerable persons.

PCSO’s in Wellingborough support our Local response team in looking for missing persons and conducting school assemblies and offer crime prevention advice and focus on your locally identified priorities such as speeding or burglary and submit intelligence and can act as a professional witness in court.
