June Crime Update For Wednesbury North Ward

Alert message sent 11/07/2019 15:31:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Dear Citizen,

Would you like to contribute to making a positive difference in Wednesbury?

Street Watch is a community patrol initiative based on street patrols carried out by members of the public with no police powers. Groups are managed by a volunteer co-ordinator who keeps a volunteer list and provides advice, guidance and support in consultation with the local police. Volunteers patrol in pairs and register each patrol on a website. The neighbourhood policing team can look at the website before the patrols take place. If volunteers spot suspicious activity they should report it to the police but not get involved.  Members of Street Watch must be between 18-80 years of age. This scheme is working across all of the West Midlands but we currently do not have a scheme in Wednesbury.

I would very much like to help set up and support a Street Watch Team in Wednesbury. The minimum commitment is only two hours of patrol a month. It can keep you fit and is cheaper than joining a gym. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in getting involved. We will need about nine people to start a scheme and I will organise a meeting if there is sufficient interest.

In June the team closed down two cannabis factories in Wednesbury which were situated in residential premises. In both cases the electricity supply to the properties was bypassed creating a real danger for local residents. Two hundred and eighty five cannabis plants were recovered and one arrest was made.

Two more individuals have been reported by the team this month for driving offences in relation to using motorbikes in Wednesbury with no helmets, no licences, no insurance and no consideration for other road users. We will continue to use CCTV to identify individuals and addresses causing problems in the area and take robust action to deal with them.

This month we have had a new officer join the team. I have been pushing for additional officers for Wednesbury and PC Mo Mohsin will provide a welcome addition to our numbers.

There have been two residential burglaries and two attempted residential burglaries this month in Wednesbury North with no particular patterns or themes of note however, as we enter that time of year where it is getting warmer and windows and doors are left open more frequently, please ensure that they are closed behind you when leaving a room unattended.

Kind regards

Sgt Giles Dean
