Invites onto Social Network Neighbourhood Groups

Alert message sent 01/07/2019 13:17:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch Scotland

Dear Citizen

We have received reports from users in a number of areas as far apart as Edinburgh and Fife regarding letter drops inviting residents to join online neighbourhood networks that say they provide information about crime and local events as well as trusted services in their area. These have nothing to do with Neighbourhood Watch Scotland, although this may be implied in the content of their invite.

Whilst these social media networks may appear
to bring back good old-fashioned neighbourhood chatter between neighbours across the street and you, as with most social networks they can carry risks.

Before your sign up to any network please consider:
  • What is its purpose and why are you joining? Do not join just for the sake of it.
  • Do you know how your personal information will be used, and you are happy with that?
  • Does the site have a clear and robust policies on privacy, bullying, harassment etc.
  • Does the site have positive or negative reviews from other users. Remember not everything posted on social media is true.
Here at Neighbourhood Watch Scotland the Neighbourhood ALERT system is only operated for community benefit and no personal information is exchanged without the express permission of individual users. There is no commercial element to our network and information is only sent from approved information providers such as police, fire and rescue, local authorities, SEPA and utility infrastructure providers such as SGN and SSEN.

If you are looking at other neighbourhood networks please do not accept any less than this standard.

STAY SAFE ONLINE!
