Road closures will affect much of Salisbury on Saturday 29 June for Armed Forces Day

Alert message sent 20/06/2019 16:35:00

Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

Please find message below from Wiltshire Council about significant travel disruption in Salisbury on Saturday 29 June 2019.

People are being advised to avoid driving into Salisbury, leave their car at home and use alternative transport on Saturday 29 June, as many roads will be closed for the Armed Forces Day parade taking place in the city.

The main Armed Forces Day National Event is taking place a Hudson’s Field in the city from Friday 28-Sunday 30 June, and as such many roads in the Hudson’s Field area will be closed all weekend, though residents and carers will have permits to allow them to their properties, and emergency services will have access.

However, on Saturday 29 June, as well as the road closures around Hudson’s Field, roads in Salisbury city centre will be closed for logistical and security reasons from 6am until 2pm for the military parade, which begins in the centre of Salisbury. This will affect many businesses and residents in the city, as vehicle access to their home or business may be restricted; this includes parking and deliveries.

It is also anticipated that there will be long delays for motorists in and around the city, so the advice is: please do not drive in Salisbury before 2pm on Saturday 29 June unless you really have to.

Please note that there is no charter market being held on Saturday 29 June – it is being held on Friday 28 June instead, though other shops and businesses in the city will be open as usual.

If you are visiting Salisbury by car but not for Armed Forces Day, please use the park and rides; if you’re visiting Armed Forces Day by car, please use the appropriate car parks, as signed as you approach Salisbury.

There are alternative travel arrangements in place, including shuttle buses to the parade and buses to Hudson’s Field. To find out more about the buses available, and other alternative transport, please see: www.wiltshire.gov.uk/salisbury-afd-visiting.

Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: "We are honoured that Salisbury has been chosen to host the Armed Forces Day National Event, and we are looking forward to the military parade through the city on Saturday 29 June, which promises to be a spectacular occasion.

“However, due to the road closures that we have had to implement for security and logistical reasons, many roads in the city will be closed on Saturday 29 June and there will be long delays, so I would urge people not to drive on this day unless they really have to.

“There are less than two weeks to go, so please make alternative arrangements and use the buses and other forms of alternative transport available.

For a full list of road closures, please see www.wiltshire.gov.uk/salisbury-afd-road-closures; or to find out more about the parade, please go to www.wiltshire.gov.uk/salisbury-afd-military-parade.
