This festive season , make sure you don't get conned out of a great Christmas , by thinking twice before you click and taking some simple precautions. That way you can make it a time to remember for all the right reasons.

Christmas is also a favourite time of year for criminals , well aware that you are busy online and have too many other things on your mind to worry about safeguarding yourself , your family and your finances.

Top ten tips for having a safe and happy Christmas online :

SHOP, SHOP, SHOP !

I
f something appears to be too much of a bargain , then it probably is ! The goods may be of far inferior quality or may even not exist at all. Always check payment pages are secure and log out when you have finished shopping online.

AUCTION BARGAIN... OR NOT ?

When making a purchase form an auction website , use insured payment methods like Paypal and never do a bank transfer to someone you don't know. Do all you can to check the seller is authentic and look out for fake goods as they are illegal and cost livelihoods.

JUST THE TICKET !

Buying concert or event tickets as a gift or for yourself ? To avoid fraud , buy only from official sources and never pay by direct transfer.

COME FLY AWAY...

Whether you are planning to take a break this Christmas or early in the New Year , make sure the holiday or flight is genuine by thoroughly researching and check travel agents for an ATOL /ABTA number.

WHO'S ASKING ?

Scam emails , calls , texts and post are becoming more and more clever and we are all bound to get some over Christmas. Think twice before you are talked into anything , no matter how busy you are.

YOUR PASSWORD IS YOURS, KEEP IT THAT WAY !

Passwords that are easy to guess , that you use for more than one account or that you share with someone else are a no-no !

SECURELY CONNECTED ?

Secure Wi-fI is vital for your privacy. At home check your router security settings. Out and about , never use "free" Wi-Fi hotspots when what you are doing is private.

GREAT OFFER , OR SUBSCRIPTION TRAP ?

Don't sign up for " free" or " low cost" trial goods without thoroughly reading the small print. You may be signing up to expensive direct debits !

SEASON'S GREETINGS !

Do not open attachments or click on links in festive ( or any other emails ) that you are not expecting as they could be scams. Also be careful with e-cards as they too can be fraudulent.

AVOID THOSE NASTY CHRISTMAS VIRUSES

No i am not talking about coughs and colds !
Always have Internet security (antivirus ) software and apps switched on and updated

Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
